Winskill Elementary School was built for a sum of $230,000 on land adjacent to the former Lancaster High School (now Central Office) deeded to the school district by the Winskill sisters.
The Winskill sisters, Henrietta and Christina, who lived for many years on a little farm on the west side of Lancaster, in 1946 donated two blocks of land adjoining the high school as a site for a new grade school.
Winskill Elementary School was built in 1951 and 1952. Winskill bears the name of Henrietta and Christina. The building was dedicated and opened in the fall of 1952. The North and South schools were closed and all kindergarten through eighth grade classes were held in the Winskill school building.
In October 1960, the Hilma Lowry home and property were willed to the school district. The home was sold and moved from the premises. The land became part of the playground area.
To meet ever-increasing needs, an addition to Winskill was built in 1965-1966. Besides expanding the classroom area, several new features were added. Among these were a new cafeteria, art room, special education section, band room, audio-visual materials center and elementary library, and a gymnasium, originally referred to as a multi-purpose room.
The Winskill principal's office was remodeled as part of the new addition construction anda. counselor and nurse's office was added adjacent to it, as was a new health room, offering the services of a full-time nurse.
In the fall of 1966, all rural schools in the area were closed and the children from the districts were brought in to Winskill Elementary School by school buses.
Today, Winskill Elementary School is home to students in Early Childhood through fifth grade.
